2.1 Download your dataset

First, you need to download your data.

Your data files are coming from different places. Your initial path for creating your dataset will vary depending on the source.

2.1.1 The World Values Survey

If you are using the World Values Survey download the SPSS version of the file for the country you are using. Download the codebook, the methodology report, and the survey design reports as well. This video shows you how to download a WVS dataset.

2.1.2 State Data from the IPPSR Site

If you are using either IPPSR state data you will want to download the sections with variables you are interested in studying. Include the core dataset as part of your download. Including the years 2000 through 2020 should be sufficient. Don’t forget to get the codebook. This video shows you how to download state data.

2.1.3 Country Data from Gapminder

To study nations, you will use Gapminder. You will need to do some preliminary work by first identifying and then downloading an Excel file for each variable you want to use in your research. Send me your files by attaching them to an email so I can connect them into one dataset. Think about finding ten or so variables to limit the need for adding to your dataset later in the semester. This video shows you how to download Gapminder data.

Don’t forget to move your dataset to your R project folder!
